Announcing NotesIn9: Extended Edition

Category NotesIn9
I'd like to announce that, on occasion, I'm going to break my self imposed 9ish minute rule and create longer screencasts. I'm calling these special episodes:

NotesIn9: Extended Edition

My first two Extended Edition shows will be the sessions that I presented at the IamLUG and MWLug conferences.

Introduction to XPages
You've heard about XPages now come and see how easy it is to get started. Leave behind your Navigators and Outlines and come see the X Side of the world. Don't forget to pack your Domino Objects and @Formulas because you can still use them to create applications that run on both the Web and the Notes Client.

XPages: Beyond the Introduction
You've seen XPages, but how do you best use it? Come to this session to find out how to integrate the BluePrint CSS FameWork to help speed up your application development. See how to best use Custom Controls to control now only your layout but also your content. Learn some other tricks of the trade to make your applications POP.

Both of these will be approximately 60 minutes in length.  When watched back to back I consider these to be comparable to a 2 hour XPages Jumpstart.

Here's a couple of tweets from the sessions.

So if you couldn't make it to the conferences, you'll get to see my presentations very soon.

When will they be available?  Hopefully in a week to 10 days.  I want to record them using 8.5.2 Gold, and that comes out on Tuesday.

The regular NotesIn9 shows will continue, and very likely I'll even redo much of this content in 9 minute format as well.

Stay Tuned and thanks for watching!

P.S. Since these shows are longer, I would be willing to entertain sponsorship, if someone thought it might be a good fit for a related product or service.  But regardless, I'll be producing these shows no matter what.

XPages Invades MWLUG

Category NotesIn9
I'm really excited to be making my first trip to Cleveland this week for the 2nd Annual MWLug User Conference.

The conference, on Thursday and Friday and is jam packed with Administration and Development sessions.

If you're interested in getting up to speed on XPages, this is the place to be!

I'm doing 2 sessions:
Introduction to XPages
You've heard about XPages now come and see how easy it is to get started. Leave behind your Navigators and Outlines and come see the X Side of the world. Don't forget to pack your Domino Objects and @Formulas because you can still use them to create applications that run on both the Web and the Notes Client.

XPages: Beyond the Introduction
You've seen XPages, but how do you best use it? Come to this session to how to integrate the BluePrint CSS FrameWork to help speed up your application development. See how to best use Custom Controls to control now only your layout but also your content. Learn some other tricks of the trade to make your applications POP.

In the first session I assume you know nothing about XPages and we go from there. In the second session I attempt to go further and help you establish a comfort zone with how XPages works, how you do certain things with it, and how you move around designer.

In addition to my stuff there's going to be a hands on workshop that looks really interesting.  I highly recommend stopping by for this if you want to start playing with XPages during the event.

XPages Workshop: Building a Simple Application - Michael McGarel and Roy Rumaner
In this unique DIY ("develop it yourself") workshop, new XPages developers can come in and build an XPages application on their own laptops. Developers work at their own pace as they follow the step-by-step instructions (similar to the Lotusphere labs). Mike and Roy are the "proctors," available for answering questions and providing hints. A true community learning experience!

Richard bring to the table information that I wish I had when I was first starting out. I'll be looking forward to this one to see what I know or have missed.

Starting XPages? Avoid These 10 XPages Gotchas - Richard Sharpe
Starting with a *very* brief intro to how XPages work (so no experience neccessary) I'll be covering the pitfalls that have cost Notes developers several hours in investigation before finding the correct solution. So whether it's interpreting what Designer tells you to what it actually means; interpreting what specific errors (or where no errors are apparent but the XPage doesn't work); or why some Javascript only works in certain contexts, I'll be looking at issues that cause beginners pain, why they occur, how to recognize them and resolve them.

I'll be talking a little about Server Side JavaScript in my sessions.  The first thing I'll say is that it's really not that scary.  The second thing I'll say is to go to Scott Good's session. I know I'll be there.

What You Need to Know to Get Started with Server-Side JavaScript - Scott Good
Underneath the skin, most XPages applications make extensive use of Server-Side JavaScript (SSJS), a hybrid of conventional JavaScript, @Formulas and LotusScript specific to the Domino platform. Although confusing at first, seasoned Notes developers with a basic understanding of JavaScript quickly find themselves able to use SSJS to do things in a fraction of the time needed to do them using conventional web development techniques. In this session you will get an overview of SSJS, how it is used in XPages, and some of the key components you'll need to be familiar with to work easily and effectively in this new language.

If you ever wanted to meet someone from the future, then come and meet Tim Tripcony and find out what's possible if you really want to push XPages to the limits.  And who knows, maybe he'll even share the formula for transparent aluminum if we're lucky.

XPages: The Evolution of Possible - Tim Tripcony
XPages do not just provide a new way of developing the same Notes/Domino applications we always have; instead, they unlock a whole new realm of possibility, allowing us to include features in our applications that were previously considered difficult... if not impossible. In this session we will explore five pillars of functionality that will not merely make your application interfaces appear more modern - they will instantly transform how you, your users, and your organization as a whole view the Lotus Notes and Domino platform.

Not an XPages session itself, but you're not going far in XPages without a good understanding of some core web technologies.  As a Notes Client Developer I've not used a ton of web stuff so I'm really looking forward to Brandt's session.

Web Technologies Every Domino Developer Should Know - Brandt Fundak
XPages in Notes/Domino 8.5 has fundamentally changed how we should look at Domino development. For Domino developers who do not have experience with Web 2.0 technologies however, these changes can be daunting and can make some of the under-the-hood development in XPages seem overwhelming. This presentation serves as an icebreaker for Domino developers who want to learn about Web 2.0, but find the vast ocean of information available overwhelming. Topics will include, XML, XML namespaces, JavaScript, CSS and AJAX.

Hope to see a lot of people there!  If you see me please say hello!

NotesIn9 "Live" coming to IamLUG

Category NotesIn9
Next week I'll be in St. Louis for IamLUG. I'm really excited about this.  Last year it was a great event and this year I'm honored to be one of the presenters. I'm presenting a session called:

XPages: Beyond the Introduction

I actually reused the title from a Webinar for Lotus Education Online last year, but none of this material was used in that event.  I consider this an "Advanced Intro" session and thought the title fit. Most of this material is brand new and not even been used on NotesIn9 before.

The goal of the session is to try and help you establish a comfort zone with XPages.  It's geared to people relatively new to Xpages but have started using it. There's going to be a lot of little demos.

I'm going to talk about:

  • Custom Controls
  • Data Binding
  • Server Side JavaScript
  • Dojo
  • Repeat Controls
  • Rendering
  • "The Big Finish"
It's like 6 LIVE Notes In 9 shows in 1 hour.  What could go wrong?

In the "Big Finish" section, I'll be bringing several XPages techniques together and will demo a new App I'm working on that's destined for openNTF.org.

If you're not coming to IamLUG don't worry, there's a couple of options.  I'll be presenting this session at MWLug later in the month. I'll talk more about MWLug shortly.  If you're not able to come to either of the events, again, don't worry.  I'm sure this material will be making it to NotesIn9 pretty soon.

Also....

This year IamLUG has created a "TackItOn" training day.  As part of that event, Matt White is bringing his XPages101.net to the classroom in a full days worth of XPages training goodness. I'll be there as well assisting Matt and trying to help out throughout the day.  What better way is there to get started using XPages then spending a day with the 2 guys who regularly create XPages training videos?

Hope to see a lot of people in St. Louis!  Please stop by and say hello.
