XPages in 8.5.1 Client? Uhh Maybe Not...

Category Lotusphere
The other day I made a post after getting out a session with Maureen Leland.  One of the questions asked  what when is it coming to the client?  And she had said 8.5.1.  I even asked the guy next to me if I hear it right and he said yep!

Well today at the BOF with the developers some said asked the XPages in the client question and someone said that it's coming but there's not commitment on time frame.  What?  I followed up the question what I heard early they they said that might have been a little "optimistic".  That they have it working in some test builds and they do want to bring it to us as soon as possible.

So hopefully it will be 8.5.1  - We'll have to keep our fingers crossed for now I guess.

I did ask if XPages in the client would be "Full Fidelity" meaning it will work exact with no "tricks" to make it work in the client.  They said that's the goal but we may want the client to look different then the website.  So there will be some controls to change the look and appearance.

So while I loved having a commitment of getting this in for the next release - they didn't say it would NOT be in at least.  So here's hoping!

Lotusphere Opening General Session

Category Lotusphere
I'm sitting in at the session. Lights everywhere...  loud music blaring... has the feel of a rock concert.  Biggest screens on the stage that I ever saw!!!  I wonder if you could hook up a Playstation?

I don't know if I'll be live blogging as other people we'll be doing that.  But I might be updating this page with anything really interesting to me.  Stay tuned

Lotusphere - An Apple a Day

Category Lotusphere
On Sunday I went to a bunch of sessions.  I found it really interesting that in every session except one, the speakers were using an Apple computer.  I think they were all independent  consultants.

The one session that was not running on an Apple?   Maureen Leland and her partner Maire Kehoe (Pronounced "Mory" I think).  They had ThinkPads.  They are the developers of the Designer client.  Too bad they're not on Apple - maybe we'd have a native designer by now.  I wonder if we should start a petition for IBM to get them MacBooks!! :)

While it's been strongly hinted that Designer might come to "Other Platforms", I haven't heard any time frame yet.

As for as the attendees go...  To me it looks like most of the consultants and well known bloggers are running Mac, but the IBM staff and majority of the people in the audience are on PC Laptops.  Though I am seeing a bunch of people with "netbooks".

JSON and AJAX Jump Start

Category Lotusphere
I just finished with Scott Good's JSON and AJAX jumpstart.  I've seen Scott speak many times at the Advisor Conferences.  One of the great things about him is that he's not only does he just exude energy, but you can tell that he's really passionate about the subject.

The session was really all about JSON and a data store and using it in conjunction with AJAX principals to make your website "POP".  The core of JSON I think is using Javascript arrays with named pairs.  To me - not really being a web guy, this seems a lot like LotusScript Lists.  And I LOVE Lists.   Interestingly, a javascript array can contain other arrays or objects.  I'm not sure if you can do this with a LotusScript list.  I think I recall seeing you could but I don't know.

He walked through several simple looking demos the progressively brought javascript arrays (JSON) to the browser and dynamically updated the web page.

Then in a moment that seemed right out of a Greek Wedding he took a glass and smashed it on the floor!  (ok.  it was really an accident)

To me the "Holy Grail" is to bring back the dynamic view data back to the browser and update the page and his demonstrated that as well.

Even though he didn't write a lot of code to get the results he wrapped up with a brief mention of jQuery.  jQuery is a lightweight javascript framework and takes the little bit of code he wrote - and makes is smaller.  Definately something to look into.

He'll be posting the demo on his blog and I'll be looking forward to going through that.

I'm personally pretty excited about this because I think I've finally going to get my company to load HTTP on the productions servers!!  HTTP and 8.5 getting installed soon.  I won't know what to do first!

Now it's off to Introducing Domino Designer 8.5.  I want to go to xPages session first but since that repeats later I'll catch it then.  It seems there's an "Art" to scheduling and like everything here at Disney, there's just not enough time to do everything!

BALD and Beyond

Category Lotusphere
Yesterday was the annual BALD event.  I was very happy to meet such a great group of people there!  Too many names to mention,  I don't want to risk missing anyone.  But I wanted to thank everybody for being so nice!

Probably the best lesson learned is that the networking comes first and sessions come second.

Today comes the start of the Sessions. For me the focus is xPages, xPages and then maybe some xPages!

oh yeah!  Finding my was around this maze will also be a priority!  :)

xPages at 30,000 Feet

Category lotusphere
I'm in the airplane, flying at 30,000 from Philly to Orlando and I'm really working on xPages for the first time.  Let me tell you something...

I'm LOVING IT!!!!!

All I have under my belt is the beginning Developer Works article that Chris Toohey wrote.  I read it the other day and walked through the exercise.  I printed it out so I can refer to it if need be but haven't needed to yet.

I guess I would describe working with xPages as very "Natural" feeling.  It just seems to make sense so far where traditional Domino Development never did.  At least to me anyway.

I've got a little pet project that didn't exist when I boarded.  So far I've got an xPage for the document editing and an xPage for the view.  Dropped some buttons on with simple actions.  Bound the data... Testing and the functionality is just working!!!!

This is just really seems to Rock Big Time!!!  I'm a happy camper.  I will most likely be in every xPage session that I can get too.

Thanks to Lotus for an awesome advancement and thanks to Chris for a great article to get me started!

Ending now because I want to get back to Designer!

How to find me - The Old Fashioned ANALOG method!

Category Lotusphere

I've been reading about all these high tech ways of finding people...  and like a lot of people I've loaded Brightkite onto my iPhone and will try and use that.

I'm taking my Macbook with and will try and do some live or semi-live blogging.  Since this is my first trip I'm not too sure how laptop friendly the famous Lotusphere bags are so I'll probably have my own that my wife "embellished".  Somehow I think it'll fit in.

Anyway, if anyone sees it please say hi!

By the way... If anyone sees someone other then me with it...  call Security!!  :)

Reminder: Planet Lotus Blogger of the Year

Category Lotusphere
I just wanted to remind everyone to vote for the blog/blogger of the year over at Planet Lotus.com.

For an extra incentive to vote, and as means to donate to "the cause" I got my wife, who has a small engraving/custom product business, to make an award for the winner.  I asked her to make it look like a "Domino".

The winner will receive this plaque.  She'll engrave the winner's name and website on it and I'll get it to Yancy for the BALD event.

Let's end the voting at 12:00 PM EST on Thursday.  That should give her plenty of time to put the winners name and site on the plaque.

Good luck in the voting!!
