Announcing Notes in Nine

Category Notes
I'd like to announce a new ScreenCasting series that I'm starting up.

Notes in Nine

This will contain short tips and techniques focused on Lotus Notes and Domino.  I plan on having topics geared for end users and beginning to middle developers. I think there's not enough information available for the new or inexperienced developer and I'd like to change that.

Why is it called "Notes in Nine"?

Because I'm going to really try not to stay around 9 minutes in length.  One reason is that YouTube, who I'll be using for now, has a 10 minute limit on videos.  I'm going to try to stick with YouTube, rather then a more flexible hosting company, in an effort to make these videos more available. I think this is important when I get to end user videos. Another reason for the shorter lengths is quite frankly, I've got a face for radio and a voice for silent films.  Viewers might not be able to take more then 9 minutes of me. :)

So anyway, here you go.  Episode 1 I guess you could say.  This show deals with XPages and Repeat Controls. I show how a repeat control can be used to display data from a view without it looking like a typical table.  If you're a Design Partner there isn't anything to see here.  But if you're new to XPages or thinking about what XPages can do for you, this might be worth a look.

Notes in Nine: Repeat Control

Technical Notes:
I tried to embed this video but didn't like how it looks.  I recorded it at 1280x720 so it's best displayed in full screen at that resolution.  The link above is using the "fmt=22" trick.  While this looks very sharp on my main Mac screen, viewing it inside a Virtual Windows machine makes it look a little blocky.  I'm not sure what that's about.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any feedback or insight that anyone may have.

Thanks!

Gravatar Image1 - David,

FANTASTIC! Very good video on how to use the repeat control. I can't wait to see more of these. Maybe you could put them on the iTunes store or something.

Gravatar Image2 - Great initiative David! I know when I was first learning Asp.net I used a site called www.asp.net that was sponsored by Microsoft. It had a large library of videos that found a very convenient way to learn. I anticipate your own videos being a big help to many my fellow xpage 101 kindergarten classmates. Thanks.

Gravatar Image3 - Excellent work, David!

Gravatar Image4 - Thanks for the feedback everyone! I really appreciate it.

I am going to see about getting it on iTunes.. Just not sure how yet. Emoticon

Gravatar Image5 - Your production quality is great! and you manage to get a lot of information into 9 minutes. I think I will have to redo my videos....

Gravatar Image6 - David. I found this very helpful. Thank you. I have gone through each step carefully and you have answered my questions about the repeat. I have looked at the IBM profiles application to understand the css, but I cannot get IE7 to put the block side-by-side as Firefox does, and I cannot read your css on the video. Please let me know what it should be? And would you consider doing a topic on handling views with main and response documents? To finish: your voice is good for the presentation task; didn't see your face. Thanks again. Bill

Gravatar Image7 - @6 The IBM Profiles application doesn't put the blocks next to each other like firefox does. Unlike the Safe and Cozy Notes client, XPages is pushing us towards the world of CSS Hacks for different browsers. I'll post my code later today so you can see everything.

I'll be dealing with response documents VERY soon!!!!

Thanks for the feedback!!!!!

Gravatar Image8 - Nice idea and great first example David. Someone on the 85 discussion forum was having an issue with using a view source with a repeat...and I directed him here. I think this example and series will be really helpful getting folks up to speed on XPages. Nice work!

Gravatar Image9 - David, great job. But get in touch with me (you don't have any contact info on your blog) as I have a question for you Emoticon
